Wynns “John Riddoch” Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

I gave this a few hours in a decanter before sampling it. As you would expect from the marque, a huge Cabernet nose, showing red currants, black currants, red plums, tobacco and a touch of mint, with plenty of cedary oak. The palate is similarly proportioned; ripe red fruits, red currants, smoke and leather, with immense and brutish tannins. It is balanced at the moment, but it is like an elephant on a seesaw, and one wonders if it will ever be truly approachable. Lots of class, but will it be a classic? Only time will tell. Leave for another 10 years or so.
