Wantirna Estate “Amelia” Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 1998

I have been re-organising the cellar and found 2 bottles of this wine. No ullage to speak of. Still a deep red in colour, with no sign of aging. An attractive nose, red currants and black olives, with some leaf, and an almost tapenade-like concentration and intensity. The palate showed some red fruits, tobacco leaf and quite a bit of tangy acid. Still has some firm tannins; could do with some more time and some softening. Drank better after 3 or 4 hours, but never terribly complex. Missed the last glass because my wife nicked it. Drink 2013+.

    No score – ? I will take a punt on 84.

Nice to see another note. Any chance of opening more barolo?

re score: I would think 86-88
re barolo: I will do my best. Just got a few bottles from Boccaccio, so will post if possible

Looking to learn more on Barolo based on locally available wines – look forward to your thoughts.

Locally (you are in BNE I think) the only options are Wine Emporium and possibly Stewarts at the Barracks. The ‘net is good too – I have the Roberto Voerzio Langhe Neb 06 and Benevelli Piero Langhe Neb 08 from Boccaccio – both look promising. The 04 Voerzio Langhe was most excellent (a wine to sit and ponder over on a long afternoon), so I have high expectations for the 06.

Have tried 2008 of this recently and am quite taken with this grape – Cabernet- saw a 2007 which I may try- but was this the smokey year?

  6. Lincoln says:

    2007 was smokey
