Knocked off one of these at dinner with friends a couple of weeks ago. It was drunk within 45 mins of being opened so it didn't have time to develop the tannins you mention, but it's 'new world' nature made it a clear winner with my friends.

It displayed very savoury black fruit, and dark cherry flavours, and against the other wine (2005 Paul Jaboulet 'Les Traverse' Cote Du Ventoux) it almost tasted Australian, even a little 'hot'.

Still it's savouriness makes it a good food wine, and I went out and got some more the next day.
