PHI Pinot Noir 2005

PHI Pinot Noir 2005

This was very oaky on opening and I didn’t like it at all. I even had to SMS a friend for some counselling. I had half the bottle one night and the rest on the following day for lunch. I am not sure if the notes from the first taste are of any worth, suffice it to say it was uninspiring. On the second day it had improved markedly: red fruits, minerals, spice, dried animal hide, a bit of meatiness and a bit of nail polish. The palate is lean and understated, red cherries and some creamy oak, focussed with beautiful texture. It was just getting better and better and then the bottle was finished. Not a wine for drinking now, unless you don’t mind the oak – I think it needs a few years to show its best.
