Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2004

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2004

It is the Magill’s 21st birthday; let’s bake a cake and celebrate! As you all probably know, Magill is a single vineyard wine, with the original 5.2 ha vineyard now part of metropolitan Adelaide. It is good to see that Penfolds still have the vines and make the wine, when perhaps other companies would have sold up and moved on.

Initially a little oaky, but it opened up after a couple of hours to show red plums, black spices, some tar, chocolate and gunsmoke. The palate is, in a single word, impressive, with sweet fruits, raspberries and plums, smoky cherries and spices, and a little meaty too. Superby balanced and elemental, with richness and purity, classy tannins and a raspberry acid drying finish. Needs some time and deserves a place in the cellar.
