McWilliams Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon 2001

McWilliams Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon 2001

A few years ago Campbell at WineFront had a competition to guess the identity of several wines based on a less than clear photo. Fortuitiously, a combination of a keen eye and a knowledge of his wine preferences allowed me to win this bottle of wine. And here it is finally opened.

I am really enjoying Semillon at the moment because they are crisp, fresh, understated and very easy to drink. This one has the most engaging nose: preserved lemons, herbs, lemons, straw, some lanolin and quite a lot of power. The palate is striking, toasty honey, lemony fruits, a fine line of soft acidity and impeccable balance. Terrific length. But um, the only downside is that its not cheap, but as they say, you can’t take it with you.
