Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2003

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2003

Hands up who likes LEAS Chardonnay! Well I certainly do, and as there was sushi on the menu tonight, I decided to open a bottle of the 2003 vintage, just recently released, and sensibly sealed under screwcap.

An engaging nose: cashews, oatmeal, peaches, and a creamy richness. The palate is a tale of two temperatures: when cold it was restrained and flinty, with fine lemony acid, but power and persistence lurking out of reach. On warming, it became expansive and broadened, showing musky fruits, seeming slightly unrefined, but it still had raw power that impressed. At its price-point, I think it competes well against villages and some premier cru Burgundies, but needs a few years to uncoil. Worth the dosh.
