68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot and 7% Shiraz. I wasn’t expecting much given the tough vintage for reds. Quite a contrast to the 2007. Backward, though perhaps it is just a year down the road, more herbal, dusty, red cherry and leathery fruits, raspberries. Palate is medium bodied, more acid driven, cedar, raspberries and mulberries, cherries, some richness, but a little gangily and awkward. Fine grained oak. Later it showed more tobacco and less dried herbs. Absolutely silky tannins. Cleanish, perhaps a bit of dirty undergrowth. Quite charming really. Needs time.

One of my fond memories of weekends in the Hunter is a tasting at Lakes Folly. I’d never managed to get near it before they ran out of wine so we were delighted to make it the last stop. It had been a long day of extensive lists of reds and whites and tasting room shelves filled with the products.
Two gentlemen stood with a barrel between them. On the barrel was a single bottle of red. “Today, we’re tasting the 06 Cabernet Sauvignon”, one announced. Apologetically, he added that they’d run out of the Chardonnay. I was just delighted that they seemed to have at least another couple of bottles of the red left
We had a great time there.
Thanks for the review, Lincoln. I’ll update my notes
