Bookclub doesnt convene so often these days, so when Michel offered to host us to try out his and Lincolns new and even more refined Pizza skills in the Pizza-Oven-that-can-sleep-two, who were we to refuse? We ate copious simply but tasty pizzas and bread and cheese. Here’s what we drank, think of it as a list ratehr than detailed notes:
Launois Quartz: Lovely “standing up” champagne. Im’ told this is inexpensive too.
09 Tantalus Riesling: Canadian Riesling is a bit of a rarity in these parts. A good one even rarer. A fair bit of colour to this. Lime, petrol, lots of sulphur initially that blew off with 30 mins or so. Advancing and developing. Acids all correct, very tasty. I like it. otherws didnt, but hey, they thought is was pinot gris or gewurz…
07 Raphet Clos Vougeot: Bit of stink on opening. Dark colour for 07. Cherry fruit, pine needle elemetns too. Chook poo. Mid weight, lots fo dark fruits, chewy fruit tannin finish. Nice.
06 Felton Road Block 3: Time and tiem again people put Felton ROad into burgundy lineups and it shows as awkward and sweet. Not this time – this held its head high. Black berries chook poo (which was a tasting theme for me on the night), Touched by earth and cedar. Really attractive round and full. yes it is new world sweet, with gentle tannins, but lovely wine.
Mystery wine: The cork was popped and this was poured straight away. Earthy & stinky, pretty red fruits, palate full and rich and slightly minty. Is this new world Cabernet? Tannins well resolved if slightly chewy. Cabernet Blend. And then the lavel was revealed – the 02 Rousseau Clos St Jacques! This did evolve and change a lot with time and show lovely dense but restrained purple fruits, but off the bat it was confusing before it became outstanding.
A Parker 100 point nebbiolo – didnt get any details: Rich fruit driven. Black texta aromatics, gobs of ripe fruit and heaps of fruit tannin an new oak quite interesting and very enjoyable. A wine for now.
05 Lafarge Volnay Caillerets: Spiky rich berries, redskins and some earthiness. Attention fading about here.
02 Bouchard Baby Jesus: Didnt take notes – just enjoyed it.
Cheers
Andrew
